What kind of golf driver do you have?

Some people think that choosing their new set of clubs is as easy as looking for the biggest price tags. I have to admit that the brand name clubs which usually cost more have a lot of technology in them and a lot of technology is used to produce them, and they usually look great, but that doesn’t mean they are the right choice for you.

The most popular and effective design for all the best golf irons nowadays is the cavity back design. This means they add extra metal around the edge of the back of the head, and there is usually more metal right at the bottom, but there is a cavity between that weight and the back of the club face. That extra weight right at the bottom helps to lower the center of gravity so you can get some height on your shots, and the metal around the edge helps to stiffen the head and give it a bigger sweetspot. As pretty much all the standard irons are already a cavity back design then there are no massive differences between them.

With drivers it is a different matter. As they have a much bigger head then there is a lot more room for new technology to be fitted in and you can see all sorts of wild and wonderful stuff being crammed into them. The square driver is an example of this innovation, by adding extra weight and support to the corners of the head, which gives it that square shape at address, then they have massively increased the MOI and therefore the size of the sweetspot. There are also adjustable drivers which help you to tweak your shot by moving little weights along tracks or taking them out to swap around, and one with an adjustable head so you can change the angle at impact etc to suit your style of play.
