Despite all my years I still feel like a little boy inside. I have a difficult time looking in the mirror and locating a real adult. You would have believed the delivery of my 2nd child would have altered it, but I still appear to be in self-denial of the aging process.
And regarding aging — or rather putting it off — my wife and I recently moved into a brand new home and it possesses space in the basement for a home gym my wife had always sought. I’m seeing dollar signs when I consider the many small and big items necessary, from the required but oft-neglected weight bench and exercise mats to selecting the best stationary bicycle. A stationary bike can be difficult these days. Do you go recumbent or upright stationary bike? Should I select an analog or electronic?
And then my wife appears set on getting an elliptical machine as well. You read that correctly. A stationary bicycle and an elliptical trainer — not only one or the other. My estimate is that it goes with the stretch mark treatment she started utilizing after the birth of youngest child. I may regret that jest.
I have to be deliberate with the budget because our new home is a bit more of a fixer-upper. We wanted it this way, yet we still have to cautiously budget every little thing, down to the cabinet knobs (I’m not kidding). My wife has an ambitious kitchen cabinet refacing project projected, but must remind her the sinks for the bathrooms she wants installed shall cost a fair amount, too.
Thankfully, we both appreciate the rustic, natural style, so we’re furnishing our new house with unstained furniture. Of course, it still involves a little finishing, but we can keep our expenses down and create better furniture than we might purchase in any store. I recently uncovered a good table for coffee with some decent, raw knotting and a entryway table in matching oak.
And then there’s the great outdoors. For our outdoor patio we are exploring outdoor fireplaces and we’ll go with a little inexpensive wicker furniture to start.
Supplying a new house seem so adult, but I cannot help but sense I am just playing house. The new furniture and exercise equipment only feel as a new era of toys.
