Well folks, the 2008 NFL regular season is here. It seems like only yesterday that I was watching the 2008 NFL draft. Time sure flies when you are having fun, and I think most Dolphin fans would agree this Dolphin off-season has been fun!
That being said, I thought I’d sit down and do my annual Nostradamus, Magic 8 ball bit, and write out a few “quatrains” for this upcoming season. So without further ado, here are my quatrains...err predictions, for the Dolphins this upcoming year.
Offensive Player of the Year – Ricky Williams.
After all of the turmoil that Ricky has put this franchise through, I think Ricky has finally find his niche. Parcells has a way of dealing with troubled players, and has gone out his way to support Ricky and encourage him. I think Ricky responds with a stellar year. Sharing time with Ronnie won’t give Ricky 2002 season type numbers, but I think Ricky can post around 1200 yards and 8 or 9 TDs.
I thought about Ted Ginn Jr, as I really liked what I saw out of him in the preseason. I really do think Ginn will have a productive season. But Miami does not have much depth at WR, and I think Ginn will see a lot of double coverage as the season progresses. I also left out Chad Pennington because I still think he'll miss some games due to injury.
Defensive Player of the Year – Channing Crowder
My first thought was possibly Kendall Langford. He was certainly impressed this season, along with Phillip Merling. I think both will have excellent years. But it seems to me that Channing has stepped into Zach Thomas’s shoes without missing a beat. Channing becomes this defense’s emotional leader, and earns his contract extension for next year.
Rookie of the Year – Phillip Merling
Merling has shown how dominating he can be. Throughout the preseason, he put constant pressure on the opposing QBs. But it was his goal line stop of the Chiefs Larry Johnson on 4th down that made me believe that he has great things in store. Although he is not a starter, I think he becomes a dominating force on the defensive line.
I also considered Jake Long. He has been everything advertised so far. But Long still sometimes makes mistakes, and I think he’ll will have some rookie growing pains. Not too much, but a few.
September 3, 2008 MIAMI GARDENS, FL (PhinsCENTRAL) -- During his press conference Wednesday afternoon, Miami Dolphins Head Coach Tony Sparano announced the team's captains for the 2008-09 season.
The players, not the coaches, voted on the team captains, and it was no surprise to Sparano who won. Starting quarterback Chad Pennington is the offensive captain and defensive linemen Jason Ferguson and Vonnie Holliday are going to share the honor on defense.
Sparano announced that the special teams captain, a position normally held by the kicker, will instead be a rotation throughout the season.
"I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to have a special teams captain each week and I'm going to vote on that myself," Sparano said.
